Spencers Wood Primary School

Reserved Matters planning approval has been granted by Wokingham Borough Council for our new community primary school in Spencers Wood, south of Reading, as part of a 900 home outline masterplan.

The new school is located at the eastern edge of the development and will create a civic presence, forming a point of visual interest as the main spine road, Fullbrook Avenue, widens out.

The mass of the two storey building reflects its core functions; with three distinct blocks – hall, entry and classrooms, joined together in a linear configuration. The plan opens up in key areas to provide views through and out of the building.

A continuous canopy wraps around the classroom block which has long horizontal ribbon windows and projecting reveals. The proposed cream multi brick with a medium grey mortar will create a planar surface which is forgiving in tone and which will appear warm in both shade and sunlight.

Native landscape planting and a Forest School provide soft edges and an acoustic buffer to the playground boundaries, with seating niches placed within sensory planting.

Reflecting the Council’s commitment to the Climate Emergency, the school will be net zero carbon in operation .
